Why Your Lack Of Vision Could Put You On The Fast Track To Mediocrity

Most entrepreneurs possess a hazy image of the future destination of their company. These vague concepts of “success,” usually with no real parameters, more resemble unfocused dreams than a specific vision.  Many a promising enterprise has sunk into mediocrity simply because the rainmaker failed to clearly express to his team – and more importantly, himself – exactly what winning should look like.

Here are a few key reasons why taking the time to articulate your vision, could be the difference maker that drives your team to success.

You must slow down to consider where you want to go

If you’re not regularly thinking about your goals and dreams and what you’re working your tail off to achieve, you will NEVER get there.  Plus, if YOU don’t know where you’re going, how can you expect your team to help you get there?  A detailed vision of the future keeps everyone – especially you – pointed in the right direction.

You don’t have to do it all yourself

Without a clearly defined vision, the weight of the whole enterprise always remains on your shoulders. When your team has no idea why you’re in business and no clue where you’re trying to go, any decision they make without your direct input can easily take you in the wrong direction. When you cast a clear vision that your team understands and embraces, they are able to make better choices with your ultimate endgame in mind.

You’re less likely to quit or get off track

Laser beam focus on the destination you envision for your company makes it easy to resist the urge to change horses in midstream or chase ideas that don’t fit into your vision of success. When obstacles arise, the whole team is better able to rally around a common cause that they’re all motivated to achieve.

While it can be difficult to carve out the time and energy necessary to put together a strong detailed vision, failing to take on this challenge is like going on a long trip without a roadmap (or GPS for my techie friends). You never realize how valuable your vision is until it’s already in place and you wonder how you ever got along without it.
